The Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra returns to the stage with a dynamic program highlighting collaboration, celebration, and rising talent. In a special feature, the orchestra joins the University Chorale and Osher Chamber Singers for a powerful performance that brings instrumental and vocal forces together for one unforgettable work.
The concert also showcases the winners of the Osher School of Music Concerto Competition—exceptional student soloists performing with full orchestra, representing the next generation of musical artistry and excellence.

The program will open with highlights from Edvard Grieg’s Incidental music to “Peer Gynt” (known for its famous ‘Morning Mood’ and ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ movements). The second half will feature Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso Op. 6 #1, Florence Price’s “Dances in the Canebrakes”, Arturo Marquez’s wildly-popular Danzon #2, and an encore by John Williams! Music Director Robert Lehmann will share conducting duties with Graduate Conducting Associate Jeff Mosher.
This live performance takes place at Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater Street in Westbrook on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 general, $5 students, seniors, USM employees and alumni. The virtual performance will be available for two days.

Conducted by Robert Lehmann, the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra is a full-sized symphony orchestra comprised of USM students and talented members of the community who audition for membership. The orchestra performs challenging, professional level repertoire from all periods.
The program will include Schubert’s, Symphony No. 8, in B minor “Unfinished” conducted by Hanna Flewelling, graduate conducting associate, and Mozart’s great Mass in C minor, conducted by Robert Lehmann.
The Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the USM Chorale, the Southern Maine Youth Chorale* and other select high school choirs for a performance of Mozart’s largest choral-orchestral composition, Mass in C minor. Although nearly complete, Mozart did not finish the last setting of the liturgy leaving it to various musicologists to suggest possible solutions. The heartfelt Et Incarnatus Est, written for his wife Constanze, is surely amongst the most beautiful settings of this text ever composed. A generation later, Schubert would leave his 8th symphony unfinished as well which has lent the work a mystical aura and contributed to its great popularity.
The USM School of Music and Confucius Institute welcome a troupe of professional actors and musicians to give a performance of Chinese opera. The program will feature Beijing opera excerpts, including movement and music, traditional Chinese instruments, and lively Chinese folk songs. All performers are trained by China’s foremost institution on Chinese opera art, The National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, the partner institution of the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University, State University of New York.
